Sheffield Dialect
£ 3.50

RRP: £4.50

by David Battye

Two young men opposite me on the tram recently were having a conversation. “If tha wants to tell 'er, thee tell ,er, but doant get me involved”. “Doant thee werry, ah've plenty to say to 'er bi missen, ah doant need thee”. This is perfect Sheffield, grammatically correct and still following the speech patterns dating back many years. These men did not expect to be laughed at or mocked, they were in serious conversation. Many books have been written as sources of amusement and claiming to plot the Sheffield dialect. I hope that by referring to this book the reader will learn to appreciate and enjoy the richness of a fading heritage.

RRP: £7.95

by Lt. Noel Cashford

Noel Casford served for six years in the Royal Navy's Mine and Bomb Disposal Squad. During this time he made safe over 200 devices, 57 in a mere 3 days. His memoirs are published in his earlier book 'All Mine!' 'All Theirs!' tells a story of some of the many other brave men of the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Engineers and civilians who risked their lives to render safe bombs and mines during World War II and the post war years. This book is a collection of some of their stories and is a touching and humorous account of their dangerous job where, in the early days of the war, you could be lucky to last more than just a few months.

The Story of Club 60 and Esquire

RRP: £7.95

By Don Hale with Terry Thornton

Before 1960, Sheffield was very much a bed and work city. All night life ended at 10pm and if you saw anyone around after that hour they were generally on their way to or from work. Terry Thornton changed all that in 1960 with the opening of his live music venue 'Club 60' in the basement of the old Acorn pub st Shalesmoor. After two successful years Terry moved the club to Leadmill Road and re-named it 'The Esquire Club'.

Many Future stars, such as Joe Cocker, Dave Berry and Rod Stewart, played there between 1962 and 1967. Although Terry closed the club after five years to turn his attention elsewhere he had set in motion a revolution in live music that spread across the whole country. Later, in 1980 the venue was to re-open as the successful 'Leadmill' under different leadership.

The Sheffield Hanged

RRP: £7.95

 by David Bentley

Between 1750 and 1864, twenty-seven men and one woman were publicly evet York, and one man hanged at Leeds for crimes committed in Sheffield. They were not all killers.

In the eighteenth century nearly two-hundred crimes were punishable with death, and the crimes for which The Sheffield Hanged were executed included arson, theft, robbery, rape bestiality and, of course murder. They have no graves and, with the exception perhaps of Spence Broughton, their names and crimes are long forgotten. The Sheffield Hanged tells their story: the crimes committed, how they were tried, how they spent their last terrible hours before they were hanged, and what happened to their corpses afterwards.

Doug is a part chairman of Bradfield Parish Council, on which he served for eight years. He still maintains a lively interest in sport, being chairman of The War Memorial Sports Club and member or the cricket club committee. Since retirement, he has taken an active interest in local history and writing, having had one other book published, 'Doug's War'.
